This 1950s bungalow hadn’t seen an update since it was built—small rooms, a tucked-away kitchen, and plenty of untapped potential. We started with a modest plan, but the more we explored, the clearer it became: a full gut was the right move. Now, it’s a brighter, more efficient home that still honours its mid-century bones.

Context, Issues, & Goals

The clients had bought a 1950s bungalow that hadn’t been touched since it was built—full of charm, but chopped into small, disconnected rooms, including a tiny, hidden-away kitchen. Eager to boost the home’s energy performance and open things up, they came to us with a vision for something brighter, more efficient, and easier to live in.

Solution/Design

We originally looked at renovating about half of the home but after some design exploration, a number of issues revealed themeslves, and we decided together that it made most sense to gut the interior and deal with every issue at once.

Final Project

We were able to dramatically improve the home’s energy performance while designing a new layout that feels open, connected, and perfectly attuned to the way the owners live—all without losing sight of its mid-century spirit. This project reflects Roost’s commitment to sustainability, thoughtful design, and preserving as much of a home’s story and structure as possible.
